PETERBOROUGH, Ont.  – Goaltender Keegan Wilson produced 28 saves for the shutout as the Brampton Battalion defeated the Peterborough Petes 2-0 in Ontario Hockey League preseason action Thursday night.

Patrik Machac, on a first-period power play, and Matt MacLeod, shorthanded into an empty net, scored the goals.

Wilson, a 19-year-old rookie chosen in the OHL Priority Selection in May from the junior C Stayner Siskins, earned his first win in three route-going exhibition appearances.

The Battalion now has a won-lost-tied record of 2-2-0 in the preseason.

Goaltender Andrew D’Agostini made 30 saves for Peterborough, which is 1-3-0.

Wilson preserved the shutout with several outstanding saves in the final period, including against Stephen Pierog and Geoff Bezruchko holding a man advantage in the fifth minute.

Wilson gloved a dangerous close-range shot from Joey Sullivan about 90 seconds later with the Petes buzzing the net on yet another power play.

Peterborough pulled D’Agostini for a sixth attacker at 18:20 of the period after the Battalion was called for having too many men on the ice, and MacLeod hit the vacant net unassisted at 19:12.

Machac struck during a two-man advantage at 16:40 of the first period, one-timing a right-point feed from Jordan Auld from deep in the right-wing circle. Dylan Blujus had the other assist with the Petes’ Clark Seymour and Jeff Swift watching from the penalty box after being called for tripping and crosschecking respectively.

Peterborough had the first three power plays of the game, but the Battalion enjoyed an 8-3 edge in shots at the end of the third penalty kill on the way to a 14-6 margin through 20 minutes.

Wilson kept the Petes off the board in the second period despite their 14-7 edge in shots, an advantage that was facilitated by four power plays.

He produced a solid save against the onrushing Slater Koekkoek with Brenden Miller serving a slashing call early in the frame and at 9:57 covered up on Bezruchko’s goalmouth rebound effort on a shot by Koekkoek through traffic.

Wilson also stoned Dylan Fitze on a Peterborough power play at 15:06, thwarting his attempt to stuff the puck home at the left post after a cross-crease pass from the right corner.

The Battalion’s best scoring chance came on Mitchell Porowski’s counterattack after the save on Koekkoek. Porowski just failed to slip a backhander behind D’Agostini as the puck skittered to the corner.

MacLeod had what perhaps was the Troops’ best third-period scoring chance before the empty-netter, driving down the left wing on a partial breakaway, cutting to the middle and firing high over the net.

Machac just failed to knock the puck home at the left post in the 18th minute.

Battalion scratches were Matej Machovsky, Zach Bell, Cameron Wind, Philip Lane, Sam Carrick and Barclay Goodrow. Peterborough scratched Mike Morrison, Andrew Yogan, Luke Hietkamp, Peter Ceresnak, Austin Watson, Reid Jackman, Matt Puempel, Joey West, Nick Ritchie, Connor Boland, Alan Quine, Lino Martschini and Derek Mathers.

The Battalion completes its preseason schedule with a visit to the Guelph Storm at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
