BARRIE, Ont. – Steven Beyers scored the only goal of a shootout to lift the Barrie Colts to a 4-3 victory Thursday night over the Brampton Battalion, ending the Troops’ season-high Ontario Hockey League winning streak at six games.

Colin Behenna scored one goal and added two assists for Barrie, which also got regulation goals from Beyers and Alex Lepkowski in moving its won-lost-extended record to 20-13-3 for 43 points, tied with the Niagara IceDogs for second place in the Central Division.

Goaltender Mathias Niederberger made 24 saves through overtime as the depleted Colts, who dressed only 17, three below the limit, because of injuries and national and provincial team commitments, rallied from an early 2-0 deficit before a crowd of 4,086.

Sam Carrick scored two goals and added one assist for the Battalion, while Ian Watters had one goal and one assist. Dylan Blujus contributed two assists, and goaltender Matej Machovsky produced 24 saves through overtime, including four in the extra session, in which the Troops killed a tripping penalty to Cameron Wind.

The Battalion, which ended its Christmas break and lost for the first time since a 4-0 road setback Dec. 2 to the Sudbury Wolves, is 20-10-5 for 45 points, first in the division.

The Battalion had Watters and Matt MacLeod back from injuries. Watters missed 30 games while recovering from three severed tendons in his right wrist suffered Sept. 30 in a 4-3 win via shootout over the host Sarnia Sting, while MacLeod sat out 12 games after incurring a concussion in a 7-2 road loss Nov. 18 to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

“I was very disappointed with our work ethic,” said Battalion coach Stan Butler. “I think what’s made us something of a solid team this year has been our ability to outwork the other team. Quite frankly, once we got up in the game 2-0, we really got away from that.”

Carrick’s three points moved him ahead of Chris Clayton into 18th place in all-time Battalion scoring with 63 goals and 69 assists for 132 points in 221 games.

Carrick precipitated overtime with his team-leading 16th goal of the season during a two-man advantage at 3:04 of the third period. Carrick put home the rebound of a shot by Blujus, with Watters drawing the second assist.

Behenna gave Barrie a 3-2 lead at 18:47 of the second period, taking a diagonal pass at centre ice from Daniel Erlich, breaking down the right wing past defender Jordan Auld and driving to the net to backhand a shot inside the left post. It was Behenna’s 13th goal.

Lepkowski tied it 2-2 at 2:24 of the period after Behenna shoveled the puck to the front from the right wing. The disc eluded Brendan Bell, the intended recipient, and went back to defenceman Lepkowski in the left circle, from where he drilled it behind Machovsky.

Each team had a shorthanded chance in the middle stages of the period. Jamie Lewis just failed to jam the puck under Niederberger after emerging from the end boards, and Barries Dylan Smoskowitz generated a solo break-in attempt off a two-on-one rush only to shoot high and wide.

Watters and Carrick gave the Battalion a 2-0 first-period lead before Beyers scored late in the frame.

Watters took a pass from Carrick in the left-wing circle and blasted a high drive past Niederberger at 6:05. It was the fifth goal of the season for Watters in five games.

Penalty killer Philip Lane forechecked furiously, breaking up several Barrie sorties, before Carrick inherited the puck behind the goal line after a tripping call to Mitchell Porowski expired. Carrick carried the puck to the right-wing lip of Niederberger’s crease and lofted a backhander into the net at 12:21.

The Colts were skating on a four-on-three power play when Beyers took a cross-zone pass from Behenna and one-timed a shot from the left circle at 19:42. Zach Hall received a phantom second assist.

In the shootout, Niederberger denied Watters, Barclay Goodrow and Carrick, while Beyers scored on the first Barrie shot before Machovsky made a right-pad save against Behenna.

The Battalion scratched Brandon Robinson, Adam Lloyd, Andreas Tsogkas and Brenden Miller. Barrie was without Alex Fotinos, Jonathan Laser, Aaron Ekblad, Alex Yuill, Tanner Pearson, Ivan Telegin, Mark Scheifele and Gregg Sutch.
