BRAMPTON, Ont. – The Brampton Battalion has traded defenceman Spencer Abraham to the Erie Otters, the Ontario Hockey League club announced Wednesday.
The Battalion acquired a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection for Abraham, a 19-year-old who was in his third season with the Troops.
Abraham scored the first Battalion goal this season, in a 2-1 loss via shootout to the visiting Niagara IceDogs in the season opener Sept. 21. He also had one assist in the team’s first four games.
In 116 games with the Battalion, Abraham scored nine goals and earned 33 assists for 42 points while accumulating 28 penalty minutes.
A Campbellville, Ont., resident, Abraham was a 15th-round choice in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection. He scored six goals and added 25 assists for 31 points in 67 games in 2010-11, when he was named the Battalion’s rookie of the year.
Last season he was limited to 45 games after suffering an ankle injury Feb. 9 that cost him the rest of the schedule.
“This gives Spencer an opportunity to go somewhere where he’ll not only get more ice time this year but also be able to play as an overager next season,” said Stan Butler, Battalion director of hockey operations and head coach.
“It also provides more opportunity for Mark Raycroft and Kyle Wood down the road.”
Raycroft, 17, is the only rookie defenceman on the roster, which includes veteran blueliners Cameron Wind, Dylan Blujus, Marcus McIvor, Zach Bell and Brenden Miller.
Defenceman Wood, 16, was a third-round pick in the 2012 OHL Priority Selection who has been assigned to the junior A Orangeville Flyers but who practises regularly with the Troops.
The Battalion now has 22 players on the roster, numbering 14 forwards, six defencemen and two goaltenders.
