BRAMPTON, Ont. – Brandon Robinson of the Brampton Battalion is one of 40 players invited to the selection camp for the Canadian national summer under-18 team, Hockey Canada announced Thursday.
Left winger Robinson is among 17 Ontario Hockey League players to receive an invitation, along with 13 from the Western Hockey League and 10 from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, all of whom will vie for 22 roster spots.
The selection camp, to be held Aug. 3-6 at Toronto’s MasterCard Centre, will produce the Canadian lineup for the Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament, scheduled Aug. 13-18 at Piestany, Slovakia, and Breclav, Czech Republic. All selection camp invitees were born in 1995 except for defenceman Aaron Ekblad of the Barrie Colts, a 1996 birth.
Robinson, who turns 17 on Oct. 13, was the Battalion’s first-round pick, seventh overall, in the 2011 OHL Priority Selection from the Toronto Jr. Canadiens minor midgets. He scored 15 goals and earned nine assists for 24 points in 57 games in his first OHL season.
A resident of Pickering, Ont., Robinson played in the 2012 World Under-17 Challenge at Windsor, helping Team Ontario to a bronze medal. He contributed one goal and one assist for two points in three games.
A total of 24 forwards, 12 defencemen and four goaltenders have been invited to the Canadian selection camp.
The head coach for Canada at the summer under-18 tournament is Todd Gill, who holds the same post with the Kingston Frontenacs.
