BRAMPTON, Ont. – Right winger Philip Lane of the Brampton Battalion has been named the Ontario Hockey League’s Player of the Week for the period ended Sunday, it was announced Monday.
“It’s definitely an honour,” said Lane. “It’s definitely a good feeling and exciting to be named player of the week.”
Lane scored one goal and added six assists for seven points in three games to help the Battalion to three consecutive wins over the weekend. The Troops have a won-lost-extended record of 18-10-4 for 40 points, first in the Central Division and tied with the Ottawa 67’s atop the Eastern Conference.
Lane contributed four assists in a 7-4 road victory over the Kingston Frontenacs on Friday night before collecting two assists Saturday night in a 4-1 decision over the host Barrie Colts and scoring a shorthanded goal in a 5-2 home-ice win over Kingston on Sunday.
“It’s great that I could contribute to the wins and help the team out,” noted Lane. “It felt good to be able to help the team get on a roll here.
“Every weekend is important for us, We need to get at least four out of six points with our division being so tight, and this weekend was huge because we were able to pick up all six points.”
Lane, who is on a four-game points streak which started with two goals and one assist in a 3-0 win Dec. 4 over the visiting Niagara IceDogs, leads the Battalion in scoring with 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points in 32 games.
“I’ve just been playing smart and simple hockey,” said Lane. “I’m doing the little things correctly, playing hard and keeping it simple.”
A 19-year-old Rochester, N.Y., native who was a fourth-round choice in the 2008 OHL Priority Selection, Lane is in his third season with the Troops. A second-round pick by the Phoenix Coyotes in the National Hockey League’s 2010 Entry Draft, he has registered 45 goals and 47 assists for 92 points in 150 OHL games, adding three goals and one assist for four points in 15 playoff games.
The last member of the Troops to earn honours as Player of the Week was goaltender Patrick Killeen, who was recognized for the period ended Feb. 28, 2010. Centre Matt Duchene was the last Battalion forward to be named Player of the Week, for the period ended April 26, 2009.
