Wednesday, September 19
BRAMPTON, Ont. - Stan Butler, Battalion Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations, announced on Thursday that veteran forward Kurt MacSweyn will succeed Jason Maleyko as the team´s second Captain. MacSweyn, who scored the first game-winning goal in team history, will assume the post when the Troops travel Friday to meet the Toronto St. Michael´s Majors.

MacSweyn, a 20-year-old native of Dalkeith, Ont. who is beginning his fourth season in Brampton, replaces Jason Maleyko, who graduated after leading the Battalion during its first three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League. MacSweyn had been an assistant captain for the past two seasons.

Coach Butler also said that defenceman Jay Harrison, right winger Aaron Van Leusen, and centre Jay McClement, who are three of the five current Battalion members who have been drafted by NHL teams, will serve as assistant captains.

r
"Kurt has big shoes to fill in replacing Jason Maleyko, but he is a well-respected player who always gives one hundred percent," said Butler. "Plus, he has strong support in Jay Harrison, Jay McClement and Aaron Van Leusen."

r
Harrison, who was a third-round choice of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, and Van Leusen, a fourth-round choice of the Detroit Red Wings in 2000, join MacSweyn as the three remaining Battalion members who played in the first game in Battalion history.

r
McClement, 18, was the St. Louis Blues first choice in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft and is starting his third campaign with Brampton.
r

r
MacSweyn, who is sixth all-time in Battalion scoring with 103 points in three seasons, scored the first game-winner in team history on Oct. 18, 1998, against the Sudbury Wolves. He and Van Leusen also assisted on the Battalion´s first goal, scored by Maleyko on Sept. 24, 1998, at Peterborough.

r
MacSweyn, a second-year student at York University, had a career-high 41 points last season and was voted the second-best faceoff man in the OHL´s Western Conference Coaches Poll.

Following Friday night´s season-opening game at Toronto, the Battalion will return to the Bunker on Sunday afternoon to host the Plymouth Whalers at 2:00.
