BRAMPTON, Ont. – Tanner Pearson scored two goals and goaltender Mathias Niederberger made 40 saves to lead the Barrie Colts to a 6-2 victory over the Brampton Battalion in Ontario Hockey League action Friday night.

Ivan Telegin had one goal and one assist, while Colin Behenna, Norm Ezekiel and Ryan O'Connor also scored for Barrie, which improved its won-lost-extended record to 25-19-3 for 53 points. The Colts moved past the Sudbury Wolves into sole possession of third place in the Central Division as Sudbury lost 6-5 in overtime at home to the Plymouth Whalers.

Ian Watters and Jamie Lewis scored for the Battalion, while Barclay Goodrow and Dylan Blujus each contributed two assists. The Troops, who suffered just their second regulation-time loss in 19 games, are 26-12-9 for 61 points, tied atop the division with the Niagara IceDogs, who fell 3-0 to the host Guelph Storm.

Goaltender Matej Machovsky allowed five goals on 19 shots before being relieved by Keegan Wilson after Telegin’s third-period goal made it 5-1. Wilson gave up one goal on three shots before a crowd of 2,105.

“We just didn’t play Battalion hockey,” said Ryan Oulahen, who ran the bench with fellow assistant coach Jason Ward as head coach Stan Butler served the first game of an eight-game suspension.

“We stress it before every single game that there’s one way that we have to play and, when we don’t play that one way, we don’t have success. Tonight is a prime example of that.”

Said Oulahen: “I wasn’t really happy with the compete level. We have to be going hard. We don’t play an easy style of hockey. From start to finish, we didn’t establish Battalion hockey.”

Said Goodrow: “We didn’t come out and play the style of game we need to play right from the drop of the puck, and it showed for 60 minutes. They were beating us to pucks and winning all the battles.”

Lewis also pointed to a lacklustre start as the Troops’ undoing.

“Right from the start we didn’t come out hard enough, and they took it to us early. This should fire us up for tomorrow night, because we can’t have another loss like this if we want to stay in first place, so it will motivate us to play harder tomorrow and learn from our mistake.”

Barrie jumped to a 2-0 lead, with Pearson opening the scoring on the power play at 12:42 of the first period. Aaron Ekblad intercepted a clearing attempt and snapped a quick shot that Pearson redirected in front.

Behenna scored shorthanded at 14:26 off a dash down the left-wing boards. Behenna got the puck past Marcus McIvor at the right point and took off on a partial breakaway to beat Machovsky inside the far post with a wrister from the left circle.

Watters replied with the man advantage at 19:52. Goodrow put the puck back to the left point to Blujus, and he fired a shot that Niederberger stopped before Watters grabbed the rebound, slipped to the right and shoveled home a backhander for his 11th goal of the season.

Barrie scored the only two goals of the middle frame to push its lead to 4-1.

Ezekiel converted a rebound from the slot at 4:14 after Dylan Smoskowitz drilled a low shot from the right-wing boards, and Pearson collected his team-leading 30th goal at 6:52, lifting a rebound into the top right corner after Telegin split the defence and made a move to his backhand.

Telegin wired a one-timer into the top left corner from the right circle at 7:28 of the third period off Mark Scheifele’s cross-zone pass on a two-on-one rush, ending Machovsky’s night.

Lewis capitalized on a two-man advantage to cut the deficit to 5-2 at 9:42, one-timing Goodrow’s pass from high on the right side past Niederberger from deep in the left-wing circle. It was Lewis’s fourth goal.

Defenceman O’Connor completed the scoring with a screened slap shot from the right point, beating Wilson low to the far side at 16:18.

The Battalion scratched Philip Lane, Andreas Tsogkas and Brenden Miller. Barrie was without Alex Fotinos, Jonathan Laser, Steven Beyers, Daniel Erlich and Zach Hall.
