BRAMPTON, Ont. – Ian Watters scored two goals and Philip Lane contributed one goal and two assists to lead the Brampton Battalion to a 6-2 Ontario Hockey League victory Sunday over the Oshawa Generals.

Sam Carrick and Brett Mackie had one goal and one assist each, while Matt MacLeod also scored for the Battalion, which improved its won-lost-extended record to 23-10-7 for 53 points, first in the Central Division. Goaltender Matej Machovsky faced 28 shots.

Carrick, who extended a career-high points streak to 11 games, moved past Aaron Van Leusen into 15th place in career Battalion scoring with 66 goals and 74 assists for 140 points from 226 games. Carrick is ninth in all-time goals for the club, one ahead of assistant coach Ryan Oulahen.

Scott Laughton and Christian Thomas had one goal and one assist apiece for Oshawa, while goaltender Dan Altshuller made 39 saves. The Generals slipped to 18-19-4 for 40 points, fourth in the East Division.

“It was definitely something I was hoping for,” Battalion coach Stan Butler said after the win, which followed two extended losses on the road, to the Mississauga St. Michaels Majors on Friday night and the Owen Sound Attack on Saturday night.

“The key was playing good team defence and trying to get scoring chances off our work ethic. We did a really good job of that today.

“Our guys knew that Oshawa was on a five-game winning streak and that they have a very talented team with a lot of good players and that today would be a new challenge for us and it would be interesting to see how wed handle it.”

Said Butler, whose charges are 9-0-3 in their last 12 games: “We worked really hard. We checked well, and I’ve told our guys all year, when you check well, youll get scoring chances. We play a very professional-style game. We play hard both ways, and that’s what you need.”

Said Watters: “We were pretty tired today, but we just kept it simple out there and pulled together. We put pucks down low, battled hard and fired pucks at the net. All the guys on our team love to win, and we seem to battle hard every game.”

Lane opened the scoring at 3:42 of the first period, converting a pass from behind the net from Patrik Machac. Lane snapped a quick shot from the deep slot, beating Altshuller over the glove.

Thomas sent a pass from the left boards to a streaking Laughton, who broke in alone on goal and lifted a backhander into the top right corner at 12:56.

Watters scored at 19:51 to give the Battalion a 2-1 lead. Watters turned and fired a wrist shot from the high slot after Zach Bells right-point shot was blocked by a defender. Carrick was credited with the other assist.

Carrick struck on a two-man advantage at 19:09 of the second period, redirecting a point shot by Lane from the edge of the crease for a 3-1 lead. The eventual game-winner was Carricks team-leading 19th goal.

Thomas pulled Oshawa within a goal at 3:44 of the third period with a seeing-eye wrister from the left boards that slipped between Machovskys legs. Matt Petgrave and Laughton earned the assists.

MacLeod replied 17 seconds later, snapping a shot past Altshuller’s glove after winning a battle for the puck in the slot with three defenders.

Mackie made it 5-2 at 14:16, finishing off a three-on-one rush. Lane chipped the puck to a streaking Connor Jarvis, who made a nifty centring pass from the right wing to Mackie for a deft redirection under the sliding Altshuller.

Watters connected on the power play at 15:36 after Boone Jenner was assessed a roughing minor. Watters, who has nine goals in 10 games this season, showed good persistence, jamming at his own rebound to slide the puck under Altshuller.

The Battalion scratched Marcus McIvor, Brandon Robinson and Andreas Tsogkas. Oshawa scratches were Scott Valentine, Peter Hermenegildo, J.P. Labardo, Nicklas Jensen, Emerson Clark and Julian Melchiori.

The Battalion hosts the Belleville Bulls at 7 p.m. Thursday.
