“We played good team defence, but what we did this weekend was get a lot of timely scoring, and that’s important,” said Battalion coach Stan Butler, whose charges won three games in as many days, two against Kingston. “Sam did a great job in leading us throughout the weekend.”
Said Butler: “The key for us is to make strong plays with the puck. We can’t turn pucks over, and when we play a smart game we’re fine. When we get fancy, that’s when we get ourselves in trouble.”
Said McIvor: “The division is so tight now that every point is crucial. For the boys to go out there and get six points is perfect for us.”
McIvor credited playing with confidence as a reason for the fact that the Troops, widely regarded as offensively challenged, scored 16 goals in three games, including a 7-4 win Friday night at Kingston.
“Some of our guys like Lewis and Adam Lloyd haven’t been scoring and they weren’t confident, but they’ve scored now and they’re confident.”
Rookie Lewis broke a 2-2 tie on an unassisted effort at 3:10 of the second period, sending the puck in front from behind the goal line. Bobkov, who sprawled to try to locate the bouncing disc, couldn’t get a handle on it before it slid behind him. It was Lewis’s second goal of the game and third in two games.
With the teams skating four a side, Carrick made it 4-2 at 12:24, redirecting a McIvor point shot. Carrick won a faceoff in the right-wing circle back to McIvor and capitalized on the resulting drive.

McIvor crossed the blue line and fired a shot that Bobkov kicked out to his right before Carrick, driving to the net from the left side, beat the Kingston goaltender between the legs.
Alcock opened the scoring at 1:18 of the first period, picking up a loose puck behind the net after Conor Stokes misfired from the left wing and throwing the rubber toward the front, where it deflected off Machovsky’s left skate at the post.

Penalty killer Lane gave the Troops a 2-1 lead at 6:05 on a strong forechecking performance. Lane, who had an initial shot from the right wing, intercepted a clearing attempt on the left side and snapped a low shot inside the far post for his 10th goal.
Machovsky, who faced five shots in the first period, made what appeared to be his best save against a two-on-one opportunity that saw him make a sliding pad stop on a one-timer by Alcock from the right circle.
Nixon tied it 2-2 at 2:36 of the middle frame on a screened shot from the blue line that beat Machovsky to the glove side. David Mazurek and Tyler J. Brown drew the assists.
