OSHAWA, Ont. – Andy Andreoff’s power-play goal 27 seconds into overtime lifted the Oshawa Generals to a 3-2 victory over the Brampton Battalion in an Ontario Hockey League game Friday night.
Andreoff’s shot from deep in the right-wing circle deflected off the left skate of defender Zach Bell, who was engaged with Boone Jenner in front of Battalion goaltender Keegan Wilson.
Oshawa went on the power play when Marcus McIvor drew a holding penalty for stacking up Jenner at the Battalion blue line at 19:17 of the third period.
Lucas Lessio and Scott Sabourin also scored for Oshawa, which moved its won-lost-extended record to 19-19-4 for 42 points, fourth in the East Division. In their previous game, the Generals saw a five-game winning streak ended in a 6-2 loss Sunday at Brampton.
Goaltender Kevin Bailie made 26 saves before a crowd of 4,255.
Philip Lane and Barclay Goodrow scored for the Battalion, which rebounded from a 2-0 deficit. Wilson faced 38 shots for the Troops, 23-11-8 for 54 points, first in the Central Division. The Battalion is one point ahead of the Niagara IceDogs, who defeated the host Sudbury Wolves 5-2.
For that, the Troops must be thankful for the point garnered by getting to overtime, which was made possible when Andreoff, staring at a wide-open net with Wilson down, rang a shot off the right post with 14 seconds left in the third period.
The Battalion is 9-1-4 in its last 14 games, its only regulation-time loss coming Thursday night in a 3-2 home-ice setback to the Belleville Bulls.
“Early in the game I didn’t like our compete level,” said Battalion coach Stan Butler. “As the game moved forward, and in the third period, I thought we competed a little harder.
“It was tough to battle back and tie the game up, and after that I thought there were a couple of questionable calls. For McIvor, you get penalized for being stronger than the other guy. I thought they were diving all night.”
Goodrow precipitated overtime with his team-leading 20th goal of the season at 13:31 of the third period. Sam Carrick intercepted an attempted clearing pass and fed Goodrow, who delayed shooting, drifted to the outer edge of the left circle and beat Bailie to the short side.
Sabourin gave Oshawa a 2-0 lead at 7:08 of the second period when he wired a shot high to Wilson’s glove side from the left circle after taking a back pass from Josh Graves.
Lane replied at 14:43, sweeping the puck behind Bailie from the mid slot while off balance after taking a pass from Patrik Machac on the left wing. Brett Mackie had the other assist on Lane’s 12th goal.
Lessio struck at 19:43 of the first period, circling out of the right-wing corner to the inner half of the faceoff circle and beating Wilson with a screened shot to the far side. It was Lessio’s team-leading 21st goal, assisted by Jenner and Matt Petgrave.
Each team had one two-minute power play in the period, in which the shots were 11 a side, but didn’t enjoy much success in applying pressure.
Wilson made a good right-pad stop against Nicklas Jensen in the ninth minute and denied Andreoff on a dangerous backhander from the slot in the 19th.
The Battalion scratched Andreas Tsogkas, Mitchell Porowski and Brenden Miller. Oshawa scratches were Josh Brown, Chris Carlisle, J.P. Labardo and Emerson Clark.
The Battalion hosts the Erie Otters at 2 p.m. Sunday.
